DHA Algal Oil for Kids
DHA is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid found in high concentrations in the brain and the retina of the eye. Children’s bodies can produce only limited amounts on their own, particularly at younger ages, making dietary intake important during the years the brain and visual system are developing.
Our DHA Algal Oil softgels are sourced directly from Schizochytrium sp. microalgae — the same original source that fish themselves rely on for DHA — rather than from fish oil. Each softgel can be twisted open and squeezed onto food or a drink rather than swallowed whole, making it suitable from age 3.
DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal visual acuity in children — the two core benefits at the heart of this product.*

About this product
Description
The retina of the eye and the brain are among the richest sources of DHA in the human body. During childhood, while the visual system and brain are still developing, dietary DHA intake plays a meaningful role — and the body’s own capacity to produce DHA is limited, particularly at younger ages.
This formula delivers 150mg of DHA per softgel, sourced from Schizochytrium sp. microalgae with a DHA concentration of 60%. Algal oil is the original source of DHA in the food chain — fish accumulate it by consuming microalgae, so this softgel goes directly to that source. The twist-off format means the capsule does not need to be swallowed: the tip can be twisted off and the contents squeezed onto food, into a drink, or directly into the mouth. No preservatives, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours.

Why a Twist-Off Softgel?
Many children find capsules and tablets difficult to swallow. The twist-off format removes that barrier entirely: the pointed tip is twisted off and the oil inside is squeezed onto cold food, into a cold drink, or directly into the mouth — no swallowing of the capsule itself required.
Note: due to natural variations in storage and handling over time, capsules may not always open by twisting alone. Scissors can be used as a simple, safe alternative if needed.
Why Algal Oil Instead of Fish Oil?
Fish do not produce DHA themselves — they accumulate it by consuming microalgae such as Schizochytrium sp. Algal oil supplements go directly to this original source, delivering the same DHA molecule without relying on fish stocks.
This softgel’s oil fill contains no fish oil and no fish-derived DHA. The only fish-derived component in this product is the gelatin used in the capsule shell itself, which is why the product is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians despite its plant/algae-based DHA source.
What Does EFSA-Approved Mean for This Product?
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the EU body responsible for evaluating the scientific evidence behind health claims on food and supplement products. Under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, only claims that have passed EFSA’s scientific review may appear on supplement packaging and product pages sold in Europe.
Both health claims on this page — DHA’s contribution to normal brain function and to normal visual acuity — appear on the EU Register of authorised nutrition and health claims, at the EFSA-recognised condition of use of 250mg DHA per day. Fisher Kinder uses only approved EFSA claims on all its products.
No claim on this page is exaggerated, implied, or based on unpublished research. No claim describes a treatment, a cure, or a therapeutic effect. Every statement is backed by reviewed scientific evidence and authorised under EU law.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this product vegan or vegetarian?
No. While the DHA itself is sourced entirely from algae (Schizochytrium sp.) rather than fish oil, the softgel capsule shell is made from fish gelatin. This product is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
If the DHA comes from algae, why does the capsule contain fish gelatin?
The DHA-containing oil and the capsule shell are two separate components. The oil fill is 100% algal-sourced — no fish oil. The capsule shell, however, uses fish gelatin as its base material, which is a separate manufacturing choice unrelated to the DHA source itself. We state this clearly so there is no ambiguity for families avoiding animal-derived ingredients.
Why algal oil instead of traditional fish oil?
Fish do not produce DHA themselves — they obtain it by consuming microalgae like Schizochytrium sp. Algal oil supplements go directly to that original source, providing the same DHA molecule without depending on fish stocks, and without the fishy taste or smell some children dislike in traditional fish oil supplements.
My child finds it hard to twist the capsule open — what can I do?
Due to natural variations in storage and handling conditions over time, capsules may not always open by twisting alone. Using a pair of scissors to snip the tip is a simple and safe alternative.
Can my child take DHA Algal Oil alongside other Fisher Kinder products?
Generally yes, as DHA Algal Oil does not overlap with the core ingredients in our other formulas. If your child takes any other supplement or medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
How long does one box last?
At 1 capsule per day (ages 3-12), one box of 60 softgels lasts 60 days. At 2 capsules per day (teenagers and adults), one box lasts 30 days.
