Family meals without the battles
Refusing to taste is a normal stage of development, not a parenting failure. What happens at the table goes far beyond what is on the plate.

Wariness of new foods, an expected stage
Between two and six years old, most children go through a phase of wariness towards new foods, especially vegetables. It is a described and documented behaviour, not an individual whim.
This phase fades with time and repeated exposure. A food often has to be offered several times, without pressure, before it is accepted.
Who decides what
A simple division helps a lot: the adult decides what is offered, where and when; the child decides what to eat from what is offered, and how much.
Forcing children to clear their plate or using dessert as a reward blurs the signals of hunger and fullness, and links certain foods to pressure for a long time.
Cooking together changes the way they see food
A child who has washed, peeled or stirred a food is more willing to taste it. Shopping together, choosing a vegetable, preparing it: involvement often comes before acceptance.
Tasks can start very early, adapted to age, from simply carrying a salad bowl to supervised cutting.
The shared meal, a moment that counts
Eating together, without screens, is associated with better eating habits and a calmer family atmosphere. A television or phone at the table draws attention away from fullness signals and cuts conversations short.
Not every meal has to be eaten together. A few a week, truly shared, are enough to establish the ritual.
Patience remains the most effective tool: phases of selective eating pass.
- Refusing new foods is a normal stage between two and six years old.
- The adult decides what is offered, the child decides how much.
- Involving the child in the kitchen makes acceptance easier.
- Screen-free meals: the atmosphere counts as much as the food.
