Helping your child through big emotions
Anger, tears, frustration: these outbursts are not tantrums for the sake of it, they are skills still being built. Here is how to support your child without giving in or hardening.

A brain still under construction
The brain regions that make it possible to put words to an emotion and to moderate its intensity keep developing throughout childhood and adolescence.
A four-year-old who screams because their cake is broken is not manipulating: they simply don't yet have the tools to cushion the disappointment. Scolding them for it doesn't give them those tools.
Name it before reasoning
At the emotional peak, explanations don't get through. Naming what is happening — "you're angry because you wanted to keep going" — helps more than arguing.
Naming is not approving. You can acknowledge the emotion and hold the limit: "I understand you're disappointed, and we're still stopping." It is this combination that calms things down fastest.
The role of structure
Stable, predictable rules reduce the number of conflicts, because they remove the negotiation. Structure that varies with the adult's tiredness has the opposite effect.
Announcing transitions in advance — "in five minutes we tidy up" — avoids a good share of the meltdowns linked to changing activity.
Tiredness, hunger, screens
Most outbursts happen in three situations: the child is tired, hungry, or just coming off screen time.
Checking these three factors before interpreting a behaviour avoids a lot of misunderstandings. A snack and half an hour of calm settle more meltdowns than a discussion.
- Emotional regulation is a skill that is learned, slowly.
- Naming the emotion calms faster than reasoning.
- Check tiredness, hunger and screens before interpreting a behaviour.
- A lasting difficulty is a matter for a professional, not a supplement.
